Jämälankapeitto / Leftover Blanket

Tilkkuja on tullut tehtyä sellaiset 30 kipaletta. Tässä on kuva taas yhdeksästä. Jahka olen muutaman taas pingottanut, niin voin pistää seuraavaa kuvaa.

I have done 30 blocks and here is a picture about 9. After I have blocked some more blocks I can post next picture.

Halloween Mystery 2008 name published

Renee julkaisi tuon huivin nimen jo joku aika sitten - siitä tuli Samhain. Mikä siis on muinaiskelttien Halloweenia vastaava juhla; ainakin Wikipedian mukaan. Ja pitää vielä retostella, että mysteerin lopuksi jaetussa kokonaisessa ohjeessa on mun huivi kansikuvana. :D

Renee has published the name of the Halloween Mystery Shawl 2008 already some time ago; it is Samhain. According to Wikipedia it is old celtic festival, which is quite similar with Halloween. And I have to mention, we received the complete instructions in the end of mystery and Renee asked if she could use the picture of my shawl as a cover page; I gave the permission. :D It is the one which I included to this post as well.

Päivittelin tuon nimen Halloween huivin viimeiseen postaukseen ja poistelin spoilerialertit, kun ne on jotenkin tylsän näköisiä joka viestin alussa.

I have updated the correct name to last Halloween Mystery Shawl 2008 post. At the same time I removed all the spoiler alerts, since those are quite useless in the beginning of each post anymore.

Jämälankapeitto / Leftover Blanket

Totesin, että huiveista on jäänyt kaikenlaisia pikkunyttyröitä, joita ei raski poiskaan heittää, mutta lankaa on kuitenkin niin vähän, että eihän siitä mitään järjellistä saa aikaan. Ryhdyin sit virkkuupuuhiin ja tavoitteena on tehdä joku torkkupeitto. Tosin epäilen, että noilla jämälangoilla saan vaan muutaman lappusen aikaiseksi ja sit pitää mennä jostain hakemaan lisää lankaa. :)

Hommasin hiljattain sellaisen kirjan kuin 200 Crochet Blocks for blankets, throws, and afghans ja kirjan tekijä on Jan Eaton. Kirja lupailee, että kaikki 200 mallia tuottaisivat samankokoisen neliön. Tästä olen kyllä hieman eri mieltä. Olen tehnyt pelkästään niitä, jotka neulotaan ympyränä ja kyllä siellä osaa lapuista on saanut venyttää oikein urakalla pingottaessa ja osaa on sit suunnilleen saanut rytätä kasaan. Ja tein muutaman lapun ihan samallla puikolla samasta langasta, joten vika ei voi olla siinäkään. No, toisaalta, jos viimeisellä kerroksella on kahdessa lapussa aivan eri määrä kiinteitä silmukoita per sivu, niin eiköhän se ole kohtuu selvää, että lappu ei aivan samankokoinen voi olla. No, tähän mennessä olen selvinnyt pingottamisella ja jatkossa varmaan pienimpien lappujen kohdalla teen suosista yhden kiinteäsilmukkakerroksen ekstraa.

Niin, minulla on sääntö, että lapun valmistuttua siitä pitää heti päätellä kaikki langat ja sit mulla on paikka, mihin saan sujuvasti pari lappua pingottumaan, joten pingottelenkin niitä suunnilleen sitä tahtia kuin niitä valmistuu. Inhoan lankojen päättelyä ja pingottamista, joten ois tuhoontuomittu yritys sit kerralla viimeistellä kaikki. :)

Tuossa on ensimmäinen satsi lappuja, joita lähinnä tein yksivärisenä. Seuraava satsi onkin sit kirjavia.



I realized I have different kind of leftovers as a consequence of those shawls I have knitted. Unfortunately I have only a small amount of each yarn; I cannot use those for anything as such, but it would be foolish to throw good yarn away. So, I decided to crochet a leftover blanket. However, I have doubts I will end up to a situation I have to buy/find some new yarn since I can make only few blocks using those leftovers. :)

I have Jan Eaton’s book called 200 Crochet Blocks for blankets, throws, and afghans and based on the introduction each block should be the same size. However, I have to admit I disagree. Actually I was a little bit disappointed when I realized the blocks are not same size when finished. So far I have been able to adjust to size by blocking; I just stretch some of the blocks quite a lot. If the block is the bigger one then I just adjust the shape and do not stretch at all. Since I have made the blocks which are worked in rounds it is easy to see all of those blocks can not be the same size since there are totally different amount of stitches on the last round. Most probably I will add one sc-round to those smaller ones from now on.

Since I do not like weaving in the yarns, I have a rule I have to do it immediately for each block before I can start the next one. I am not a huge fan of blocking either; I have a place where I can block two blocks at the same time. So, that work is ongoing as well. It would be a disaster if I would try to finalize all of those blocks just before joining those together.

In the picture you can see the first 9 blocks; there are more to come.

Keltainen pikkuliina / Yellow doily

Näin kaverillani erikoisen näköisen liinan ja hän kertoi, että se on vanha, eikä hän tiedä, kuka se on tehnyt. Se oli varsin jouluinen, koska se oli pääosin punainen ja reunassa oli hieman vihreää. Itse liina oli loppujen lopuksi varsin simppeli, kuviona oli sellainen aivan tavallinen tähti ja reunoilla oli ketjusilmukkalenkkejä. Mielenkiintoisen ja erikoisen siitä teki se liinan reunus. No, lähdin sit kokeilemaan, että josko osaisin tehdä samanlaisen. Varastoista löytyi keltaista ja valkoista, joten päätin, että siitä tulee kevätliina ja sen vuoksi tein vähän muokatun, enemmän kukkaa muistuttavan tähden siihen keskelle. Pari aloitusta tuo reunus vaati, mutta nyt se mielestäni näyttää samanlaiselta kuin kaverillani näkemäni. Tosin hän asuu niin kaukana, että en pääse asiaa tarkistamaan ja hän ei ymmärrä pätkääkään virkkaamisesta.

Tuo reuna on sellainen, että se on helppo taivuttaa myös pystyyn, joten tuosta saisi ihan kivan pikkukipon, jos sen tärkkäisi. Jos siis virkatuista kipoista pitää - minä en ole aivan varma, että oisko sellainen minun makuuni.

I saw this kind of doily when I visited a friend. She told it is an old doily and she does not have slightest idea who has made it. There was some kind of star in the middle, but the interesting part was the border. The doily has been made for Christmas; it was red with some green in the border. Since I had some yellow and white yarn in my stash I made a bit modified star, which is a bit like flower. I think it suits better with those colors.

I tried to study how the border is made and I think I was able to do something similar. Unfortunately my friend lives far away, so, I cannot double check the idea and she is not able to comment anything which is related to crocheting. :)

I think this could be used also as a platter. You can see the idea on the second picture. Of course, it would require a little bit starch or sugar & water and that’s it!

Cailleach - Winter Mystery Shawl 08

Niinno, tarkkaan ottaen tuo tuli valmiiksi jo vähän aiemmin, mutta tänään onnistuin napsimaan siitä pikkasen kuvia, mikä ei ole ihan helppo homma, kun kyseessä on tuommoinen pötkylä. Otin kuvat sit lähinnä pätkissä, eiköhän niistä jonkun kokonaiskuvan saa.

Ohjeen mukaan tuo huivi ois pitänyt tehdä lace weight langasta, mutta minä käytin varastoista löytyvää fingering weight lankaa. Veti vähän tiukoille, noiden hörselöiden kohdalla kävi niin, että niissä oli 18 kerrosta ja kerros numero 19 ois ollut päättelykerros. No, siinä kävi niin, että sellaiset 20 silmukkaa jäi päättelemättä, kun lanka loppui - onneksi en ollut katkaissut lankaa eli tein toista hörselöä lankakeran toisesta päästä ja toista toisesta. Purin sit taaksepäin ja päättelin samalla, kun tein viimeistä "kuviokerrosta" eli tuota kerrosta numero 18. Eipä siinä varsinaisesti mitään kuviota ole, kun vaan levennellään koko ajan, että tulee tuollainen rimpsu.

Actually I finished this a bit earlier, but I did not have possibility to take pictures until now. It is bit difficult since it is dark almost all the time here in Finland due to winter. Other problem is the shape of the shawl, I was not able to have a good picture where you can see the whole shawl at the same time, but hopefully you get some idea.

I did not use the recommend lace weight yarn but fingering weight instead. When I started the shawl I knew it is possible I do not have enough yarn, but luckily there were almost enough. When I knitted those ruffles I made the 18 pattern rows and started to bind off after that. When the yarn run out I still had something like 20 stitches left, but since I did not cut the yarn it did not matter. I mean I knitted the both ruffles at the same time; the other one from the one end of the ball and the another one using the other end. So, instead of binding off during row 19 I did it already during the last pattern row number 18.

Joulukortteja / Christmas Cards

Viikonloppu meni samoissa puuhissa monen muun suomalaisen kanssa eli joulukortteja väkertäessä. Jotenkin tänä vuonna en oikein keksinyt, että millaisia kortteja olisin tehnyt, joten koko homma jäi todellakin viime tinkaan. Yleensä minulla on sentään idea keksittynä ja tarvikkeet hommattuna hieman aiemmin - nyt kaikki jäi lauantaille. Tästä johtuen ei sit ollut mahdollista tehdä edes kovin kummoisia kortteja, koska aika ois loppunut kesken.

Normaalisti teen täysin identtisiä kortteja kaikille, mutta askarteluliikkeessä ei ollut riittävästi samanlaisia 3D-kuvia, eikä myöskään samanlaisia tarroja, joten tänä vuonna idea ja sommittelu on kaikissa korteissa sama, mutta sisältö hieman eri.

Kuvat ovat varsin heikkolaatuisia, kun nappasin ne aamusella ennenkuin lähdin kiikuttamaan niitä postiin ja koska kyseessä on CD-kortit, niin CD:eissä näkyy mukavasti heijastumana minun käteni, kamerani ja osa mun aamutakistakin. :)

I think there were quite a many Finns who were buying/making Christmas cards during last weekend, since this Monday is the last day for sending those. Or not actually the last day, but after today you have to pay normal fee instead of special Christmas card payment. This was a special case for me, since usually I know what kind of cards I will make a bit earlier. This year I got the idea on Saturday when I was buying the material for the cards. Since I had to make all these cards during this weekend I had to make quite simple ones.

Usually I make similar cards for each, but this time I had to buy different kind of 3D-pictures, since the shop did not have enough same kind of angels or dogs or… So, this year I have same kind of cards, but not exactly the same.

The quality of the pictures is quite poor, since I took those early in the morning just before posting them. Since those cards contain used CDs you can see my hands, my camera and part of my bathrobe. :)

Winter Mystery Shawl 08 / Clue 1

No, nyt on 4 vihjettä julkaistu ja uskaltauduin alkamaan tämän. Minulla on lanka, joka alunperin oli tarkoitettu Mystery Shawl #9 huiviin, mutta jotenkin en pitänyt kyseisestä huivista ja purin tekemäni alun. No, minusta tuo lanka sopisi erittäin hyvin tähän, mutta ongelma on se, että minulla on sitä vain 1100 jaardia, kun Renee ilmoitti, että tähän tarvittaisiin 1200. No, yleensä Renee ilmoittaa langan määrät yläkanttiin, mutta sitäkin on tapahtunut, että lanka on ollut aika tiukoilla ja kerran yhtä mysteeriä muutettiin lennosta, jotta suosituslanka ois riittänyt.

Tästä johtuen sit päätin katsella, että minkälainen tuosta huivista tulee, jotta tiedän, haluanko edes ottaa riskiä. Samoin halusin varmistaa, että tämä suorakaiteen mallinen huivi on todellakin symmetrinen yms. eli voin sit tehdessäni punnita, että paljonko lankaa on mennyt ja sit puolessa välissä huivia voin tsekata riittääkö lanka vai joudunko purkamaan koko siihen asti tekemäni työn. Niin, tarvinneeko mainita, että tuota lankaa ei saa lisää. Renee

Okay, Renee has now published 4 Clues of Winter Mystery Shawl 08 and I decided to start it now. I have yarn which was originally intended for Mystery Shawl #9, but for some reason I did not like the pattern and frogged the shawl almost in the beginning. I feel this yarn would suit perfectly for this Winter Mystery, but the problem is I have only 1100 yds when Renee said this needs 1200 yds. I have noticed Renee’s estimations are a bit generous, but there have been situations where we have used all the yarn and once the pattern was changed a bit since the recommended yarn was not enough.

Due to this yarn problem I wanted to wait and see whether I like the pattern and whether I want to take the risk. In addition to that I wanted to be sure this rectangular is really symmetrical etc. Then it is possible for me to follow-up how much yarn I have used for each clue and in the middle of shawl I can just count whether I have enough yarn to finish the shawl or whether I have to frog the whole thing I have made so far. I assume, it is clear for you it is not possible to get more of that yarn… :)
